The Time to Buy - New Release of Emidio Pepe
Today we have the new release from Emidio Pepe, and this is definitely one of those producers to buy on release. The cellar potential of these wines is enormous for both whites and reds, and with only about 70,000 TOTAL bottles produced annually, the prices for older vintages escalate quite a bit. For the Trebbiano, the 2010 vintage is $200+, early 2000s will set you back $400+. Looking at the Montepulciano, go back a decade and they are $150+, 2000s are $250+, jump back to the 1990s and folks are asking $500-$700. So the best solution is to buy them on release at excellent prices and save a heap of money.
The 2019 below wasn't rated by any critics (thought the 2019 Trebbiano Vecchie Vigne was a VM95), but the 2020s received some great reviews from Wine Advocate. Secure yours today, you'll thank yourself later!
2020 Emidio Pepe Trebbiano d'Abruzzo - WA94
"Here is another must-try wine if you love Trebbiano from Italy's rustic and beautiful Abruzzo region. On a scale of Italian whites, there is no doubt regarding the aging potential of this fascinating workhorse grape. The Emidio Pepe 2020 Trebbiano d'Abruzzo (a certified organic wine) delivers some of the distinctive flavors that come with extended skin contact. You get dried apricot, honey, pine nut and beeswax. Those robust aromas meet the wine's generous mouthfeel and creamy texture. The alcohol is measured at a manageable 12.5%. This contributes greatly to the pleasure factor of this wine. Production is 33,811 bottles." - Wine Advocate, June 2023
2020 Emidio Pepe Montepulciano d'Abruzzo - WA95
"This is one of the more precious and fragile reds from Abruzzo, a mountainous region known for hearty flavors and abundantly full-bodied wines. The 2020 Montepulciano d'Abruzzo knocks that paradigm onto its side. The certified organic wine reveals subtle veils of wild berry fruit, rose, iron ore and blood orange. The wine shows a dark garnet color with finely polished tannins. Balanced acidity gives hot-vintage fruit an extra boost." - Wine Advocate, June 2023
