Refill | Strong Set of 2023s from d'Angerville
Domaine Marquis d'Angerville, Volnay
It is always a pleasure to tasted through d'Angerville, including most recently this spring at Paulee with the consistently excellent 2023s. We were impressed, and very happy to secure another small parcel from THE quintessential Volnay producer...
"I've said this before but it bears repeating that Domaine d'Angerville almost never misses and their 2023s are wines you will enjoy having in your cellars. Moreover, the tannins are sufficiently supple that they should provide excellent mid-term drinking while retaining the potential to age gracefully for years." - Allen Meadows
2023 Domaine Marquis d'Angerville Volnay 1er Cru Clos des Ducs Monopole
• 94-96(Outstanding)JM, 93-95VN, 93-96WA, 92-95(Oustanding)BH
"Aromas of dark berries cassis and cherries mingled with spices and orange rind in a complex bouquet introduce the 2023 Volnay 1er Cru Clos des Ducs, a medium to full-bodied, complete wine that in some respects represents the synthesis of the d'Angerville premiers crus-the finesse and perfume of Caillerets, the layers of Taillepieds and the structure of Champans, united in a whole that's more than the sum of its parts." - William Kelley
"Immediate distinction and discretion, impeccably balanced. Alpine strawberry, finesse with intensity, picked at impeccable ripeness, the last red to be picked, on 9th September, but it has held out thanks to underground springs. Everything exactly where anybody would want it and stays in the mouth for so long." - Jasper Morris
2023 Domaine Marquis d'Angerville Volnay 1er Cru Taillepieds
• 92-95JM, 92-94VN, 92-94WA, 92-94(Oustanding)BH
"Coming from a vineyard that is one-third uprooted at the moment, the 2023 Volnay Les Taillepieds ler Cru dials up the marine element on the nose: hints of seaweed and oyster shell percolate through dark berry fruit as a subtle pencil box note gradually emerges. The palate is medium-bodied with svelte tannins, nicely judged acidity and gentle grip on the finish. Stylish and suave, this is a very harmonious and pure Taillepieds that will be difficult to resist in its youth." - Neal Martin
"This is aromatically similar to the Caillerets if more floral in character. There is outstanding vibrancy and delineation to the equally beautifully textured medium weight flavors that are akin to rolling a tiny pebble around the mouth, all wrapped in a moderately austere and impressively persistent finale. While perhaps slightly riper than a classic Taillepieds, this is nonetheless excellent with the development potential to match. If you can find it, buy it." - Allen Meadows
2023 Domaine Marquis d'Angerville Volnay 1er Cru Champans
• 92-95JM, 93-95VN, 92-94WA, 92-94(Oustanding)BH
"This is also aromatically quite fresh with an airy mix that derives mostly from the red side of the fruit spectrum while being laced with discreet spice, floral and earth wisps. The lilting and utterly delicious middle weight flavors are not quite as mineral-driven though, unusually, they are even finer on the balanced, long and solidly complex finale. This is also excellent and worthy of your interest." - Allen Meadows
"Even in this more charming vintage, the 2023 Volnay 1er Cru Champans is the most structured wine in the range, opening up to reveal notes of cherries, berries and peonies, followed by a medium to full-bodied, deep and broad-shouldered palate built around sweet, powdery tannins. It will reward a bit of patience." - William Kelley
2023 Domaine Marquis d'Angerville Volnay 1er Cru Fremiets
• 92-94VN, 91-93VN, 91-93WA, 91(Outstanding)BH
"The 2023 Volnay Fremiet ler Cru has a taut and fresher nose than the Clos des Angles, with touches of oyster shell filtering through the bright red fruit. The palate is ripe on entry, silky smooth in texture, and this displays fine delineation. There is more grip and backbone here with a sapid, peppery finish that lingers. This has a sensuality that I hope is captured once in bottle." - Neal Martin
"The 2023 Volnay 1er Cru Fremiet is deeper-pitched than Les Angles, wafting from the glass with notes of raspberries, plums and licorice. It's medium to full-bodied, supple and charming, with a succulent core of fruit, polished tannins and a saline finish." - William Kelley
2023 Domaine Marquis d'Angerville Bourgogne Rouge
• 88-89JM, 85-87VN, 88WA, 87(Outstanding)BH
"Riper aromas include those of plum, dark cherry and more subtle earth influences. The succulent, round and delicious flavors possess better density as well as better overall depth on the slightly firmer finale. This is quite good for its level and should reward 2 to 4 years of keeping." - Allen Meadows
"The 2023 Bourgogne Rouge has a finely tuned bouquet of raspberry and wild strawberry with a light sous-bois element emerging over time. The palate is medium-bodied with sapid red fruit and gentle grip, but there is certainly decent backbone on the finish with a fresh, slightly briny aftertaste. Delicious." - Neal Martin
