Quick Refill: 98-Points, Low Prices... Saint-Damien

Jeb Dunnuck has showered praise upon Domaine Saint-Damien for quite some time, with the 2023 vintage receiving some of the best scores yet!

Two 98-point cuvées at $35 a bottle

Joël Saurel founded the domaine 1979, naming the estate "Saint Damien" in homage to a ruined chapel located near the cellars. Over time, he has acquired new parcels of land and modernized the winery. In 2013, after completing his formal education in viticulture and oenology, Joël's son, Romain, joined his father to gradually take over the reins.

Today, the estate comprises 45 hectares spread across the Gigondas, Plan de Dieu, Côtes-du-Rhône Villages, and Vin de France IGP appellations.

"A domaine located on the lower plains of Gigondas, Domaine Saint-Damien releases four Gigondas, their Vieilles Vignes, which is a blend of the single vintage, two single vineyards, the Les Souteyrade and La Louisiane, and lastly and most recently, the Clovis Saurel. All the wines are largely Grenache and destemmed, and aside from the Clovis Saurel, which is aged in demi-muids, are brought up in foudre and tank. These are brilliant, layered, textured Gigondas that represent insane values."

2023 Domaine Saint Damien Gigondas La Louisiane Vieilles Vignes
JD 98

"A bigger, richer wine based mostly on Grenache from a single parcel around the estate on the lower plain of Gigondas, the 2023 Gigondas La Louisiane shows darker blackberries and kirsch intermixed with ground pepper, sappy garrigue, and some meaty, spicy nuances that give this an ultra-classic Gigondas style. It's medium to full-bodied on the palate and has a pure, focused mouthfeel, ultra-fine yet building tannins, and integrated acidity. It's a brilliant effort that will stand toe to toe with anything in the vintage and should drink well over the coming 15+ years. Drink 2026-2041."

2023 Domaine Saint Damien Gigondas Les Souteyrades Vieilles Vignes
JD 98

"Based on 80% Grenache and 20% Mourvèdre and aged 12 months in foudres, the 2023 Gigondas Les Souteyrades is possibly the most exotic of the lineup from Saint-Damien. Kirsch liqueur, blackberries, exotic flowers, and sappy, garrigue-like nuances all define the bouquet, and it's medium to full-bodied, has a pure, layered, seamless mouthfeel, an incredible mix of richness and elegance, and a gorgeous finish. It's another absolutely riveting Gigondas from this estate that readers should snatch up! Drink 2026-2037."
