NEW Capitain-Gagnerot: Echezeaux, Clos Vougeot, and Corton-Charlemagne
We just tasted a few of the 2024 Grand Crus from Maison Capitain-Gagnerot and have quickly taken a liking to the wines. We are pleased to offer a small allocation of 2023 Grand Crus with reasonable pricing and great ratings!
Domaine Gagnerot was established in 1802, but it wasn't until 1864 when Marie Gagnerot married Francois Capitain--a wine trader--thus establishing Domaine Capitain-Gangerot. Despite Francois's early death and phylloxera decimating their holdings, Marie decided to keep the domaine and replant all the vines. The Domaine has since been inherited by each new generation, along with 3 new hectares inherited after the WWll. Today, the Domaine is comprised of 16 hectares in full ownership of the family's current generation, brother's Pierre-Francois and Delphine.
Viticulture: the Domaine favors natural treatment products and practices biodynamic farming. Vineyards are regularly ploughed to avoid erosion, thus ensuring optimal growing conditions for the vines. All fruit is hand-harvested, sorted, and destemmed prior to vinification.
Vinification: The Corton-Charlemagne receive a light press cycle of around 4 hours, then fermented and aged in 10% for 6-8 months. Both the Echezeaux and Clos Vougeot are fermented in open vats, for about 15 days with 2 punch-downs a day at the beginning. Élevage in 10% new oak for 13 months.
2023 Maison Capitain-Gagnerot Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru
JM 93-96
"This is a blend of Le Charlemagne, and Hautes Mourottes, which from 2024 Pierre-François will make separately, calling the former Charlemagne and the latter Corton-Charlemagne. In 2023 there are eight barrels worth, made in two new barrels, two older barrels and a concrete egg. These have been racked to tank since just after the harvest. Pale in colour, stony with a little toast also. Crisp white orchard fruit with a little flesh behind, and good tension. Nicely balanced at 13.5% alcohol. Drink from 2029-2038. Tasted Oct 2024." -- Jasper Morris
2023 Maison Capitain-Gagnerot Echezeaux Grand Cru
JM 93-95
"Mid ruby, very elegant and stylish, a lacy latticework Echezeaux, not massively concentrated but with impressive persistence. A floral touch with complex cherries behind. Drink from 2030-2038. Tasted Oct 2024." -- Jasper Morris
2022 Maison Capitain-Gagnerot Clos Vougeot Grand Cru
JM 93-96
"3 barrels, one new. The plot is in the Quartier du Marei Hauts, on very red soil with lots of iron. Just racked. A fine bright crimson. The bouquet is more in an attractive red fruit, with just a little blood orange, still certainly some tannins but coherent in this cuvée. A long rich aftertaste with significant energy. Tasted Oct 2023." -- Jasper Morris
