New 2023 Donnhoff - Chardonnay, Weissburgunder, Tonschiefer, and Spatlese
You certainly know Donnhoff, and by now you're aware the 2023 vintage in Germany has shaped up quite nicely. Here in the office, rarely does a day go by where we aren't getting excited about some new 2023 German wine or trying the latest bottles to roll in the door.
I just picked up a few NEW items from the Donnhoff lineup that are pretty exciting and wildly affordable. Certainly known for their Riesling, I have enjoyed quite a few bottles of his Chardonnay and Weisserburgunder so don't miss them!
2023 Donnhoff Riesling Tonschiefer Trocken - JS 94
Mostly from a section of Oberhauser Leistenberg planted in Tonschiefer (shale)
"The vibrant aromas of white peaches and white blossoms are married to an intense slatey minerality in this sleek and precise dry Nahe riesling. Quite some structure, although it is barely medium-bodied. Wonderful stony intensity at the very long, bright finish." - James Suckling, Aug 2024
2023 Donnhoff Chardonnay Stuckfass Trocken - FS 92
"Dense and still closed on the nose, with aromas of fine salted lemons, white grapefruit, quince, apricot, dried mint and nettle. On the palate, lively, elegant, with good extract, delicate acidity on a silky base. Skillful use of oak, and salty. An animating Chardonnay – very elegant and dancing." - Falstaff, Aug 2024
2023 Donnhoff Weissburgunder S Trocken - NR
Not rated, this is old vine Pinot Blanc from Bad Kreuznach and Overhausen, planted in volcanic and loamy soils, aged in a giant German barrel called a Stuckfasser (hence, the "S" designation on the label). This bottling sees more lees contact than the regular bottling, these are always complex and gastronomic wines, I'm very excited to get some 2023!
2023 Donnhoff Oberhauser Brucke Riesling Spatlese - VM 96, JS 98

The tension between the cool, dark side (think Darth Vader) and the enormous brightness of the stone fruit (think Luke Skywalker) makes this astonishing riesling Spatlese extremely compelling. 2023 Donnhoff Riesling Niederhauser Hermannshohle Spatlese - VM 97, JS 99
"The 2023 Riesling Niederhauser Hermannshohle Spatlese, grown on shale, has equal notions of moss and lemon. More air makes this smell simply of wet stone. The palate carries gentle sweetness but is absolutely precise and slender. Citrus frames everything with the clearest precision. Everything is serene, zesty, tender, yet so very serious.
