Maxime Cheurlin Noellat (Domaine Georges Noellat)... Expressive, Complex Red Burgs
Domaine Georges Noellat, Vosne-Romanée
A domaine once regarded as Vosne's finest, Domaine Georges Noellat has since regained its status with the young and ambitious Maxime Cheurlin at the helm. While the domaine split after the passing of George Noellat (the original proprietor), and a much of their portfolio going to the Leroy we know and admire today, George's wife assumed control of what remained, thus passing the domaine down to her daughter Maria Theresa Noellat and her husband Jacques Cheurlin (a Champagne producer) in 1991, who eventually passed the domaine to her grandson Maxime in 2009.
Maxime Cheurlin was only 20 years old when he assumed the reins of this historic estate. With a portfolio of a mere 5.5-hectares, this seemingly small domaine boasts some of the greatest holdings in the Cote-de-Nuits, including a large portion of vines planted before the second World War. Maxime's vinification style is best described as preserving these exceptional terroirs: rare and gentle punch downs, 14-20 month élevage, and bottling unfined and unfiltered. There's a reason he's become a bonafide star in Burgundy, his attention to detail and care to his family's domaine has resulted in an array of expressive, complex wines with enormous potential.
2023 Maxime Cheurlin Noellat Bourgogne Hautes-Cotes de Nuits Rouge
JM 87-88, BH 86-89, CT 88
"The grapes come from Curtil-Vergy, 4ha trained as vigne basse and 8ha in vigne haute. All destemmed, one third new wood. Bright purple. A light, refined red fruit, raspberry and redcurrant, medium bodied, good acidity and fair length. Drink from 2026-2028." -Jasper Morris

2023 Georges Noellat Vosne-Romanee
JM 89-92, BH 88-91
Note: from a mix of Les Jacquines, Champs Perdrix, Hautes and Basses Maizières and Les Vigneux
"Another fine even ruby purple. The bouquet is more sensual than the Gevrey, as indeed is the whole of the fruit experience across the palate as well, fine acidity, though there is a something a little high-toned to be managed. Decent acidity once again. Drink from 2028-2034." -Jasper Morris
2023 Georges Noellat Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru Aux Boudots
JM 91-94
"Mid crimson purple. The nose is not forthcoming, maybe not the most concentrated wine. Now some darker fruit perfume starts to emerge. Some tannins at the back, possible a little horsey sweetness, just enough acidity, not really together today. Drink from 2030-2035." -Jasper Morris
2023 Georges Noellat Vosne-Romanee 1er Cru Les Chaumes
JM 91-93, VN 90-92
"Mid purple with a lighter rim. A riper nose, floral, ripe raspberry, very attractive. Plenty of energy here despite the ripeness, more front loaded perhaps, with fair length. Drink from 2029-2035." -Jasper Morris
2023 Georges Noellat Grands Echezeaux Grand Cru
JM 96-98, VN 95-97, BH 92-94
Note: from a .40 ha parcel
"A fine deep energetic purple. The bouquet shows a slightly fresher fruit than the Echezeaux. Then comes an absolute starburst of all the red fruits, more ample, and secured by good grip from refined tannins behind. It is easy to fall in love with this Grands Echezeaux, especially as all the flavours stay with you for quite a while. Drink from 2032-2043."
