Standout Sancerre from Gérard Boulay, with some bottle age

Gérard Boulay, Chavignol - Sancerre

The Boulay family has been growing grapes in Chavignol since 1380. Today, Gérard Boulay has quietly made his 9ha domaine into one of the best in Sancerre.  He has old-vine plots in the most important vineyards in the region, including the “crus” of Monts Damnés, La Grande Côte, and Clos de Beaujeu, all on Kimmeridgian, or “terre blanche” soils (similar to those of Chablis), which he works manually and has farmed organically since 1990.

His wines are distinctive, mineral, and some of the most age-worthy of the region.  We were excited to secure a limited quantity of 2016 along with some 2020s and 2022s, all from one pristine cellar...

2022 Gerard Boulay Sancerre Clos de Beaujeu
• 93VN
"Powerful, ripe and concentrated, the 2022 Clos de Beaujue is about as far as you can get from a timid wine. While it's ripe, it retains a purity and drive, leading to a persistent finish that's chalky and mouthwatering." - Rebecca Gibb MW

2020 Gerard Boulay Sancerre Clos de Beaujeu
• One of Chavignol's most historic vineyards, Boulay's 0.75ha parcel lies within the original Clos of the vineyard, established by the monks of Beaujeu in the Middle Ages.  30 to 60-year old vines where the soils are pebbly, lime-rich and strewn with fossils.

2022 Gerard Boulay Sancerre La Cote
• 92VN
"The 2022 La Côte is a meal of a wine with its sinew, richness of fruit and substance. Its natural muscle gives it grip, and the finish has a chewy, gourmand character and chalky texture. Give this one time." - Rebecca Gibb MW

2020 Gerard Boulay Sancerre Les Monts Damnes
• From 50 year-old vines on one of the steepest inclines of this majestic vineyard; a 40° south-facing plot on terres blanches soil (white, chalky clay and limestone), directly adjacent to Edmond Vatan’s Clos la Néore vineyard.

2016 Gerard Boulay Sancerre Les Monts Damnes
• 94FS
"Light yellow-green with silver reflections. Delicate smoky-reductive undertones on the nose, with fine peach and yellow tropical fruit, a touch of minerality and a hint of acacia honey and tangerine zest. Juicy and elegant in the mouth, with fine fruit expression, integrated acidity, a chalky freshness and very good length. A wine in the style of a Chablis Grand Cru." - Peter Moser
