Domäne Serrig - Saar

Founded in 1904 by Kaiser Wilhelm II, the Domäne Serrig in the Saar stood as the largest and most avantgarde state domain of its time.  While iconic in its day, it declined throughout the 60s and 70s until it was privatized in the late 1980s.  It was then acquired in 2016 by Markus Molitor.

The Vogelsang monopole is a singular 25-hectare plot situated on a steep red-tinted slate incline with gradients reaching from 40-105%, facing south/southwest, at elevations rising from 220–340 meters.  Starting in 2017, 20 of the 25 hectares were re-planted with Molitor’s own massal Riesling selections, with only 5 hectares of old-vine riesling staying in production.

Martin Franzen, formerly the winemaker at Müller-Catoir, is the new operations manager. The estate buildings and wine-making facility are in the process of a remodel.  They make only two wines from this incomparable terroir.  Offered exclusively through La Place de Bordeaux, we were lucky enough to secure a small amount of each...

2022 Domane Serrig Vogelsang Riesling Grosse Lage

"The interplay of leesy complexity, grapefruit energy and wet-stone freshness is extraordinary. Enormously concentrated, creamy and minerally on the compact, medium-bodied palate. "The Domäne Serrig 2022 Grosse Lage Vogelsang is a fascinating Riesling from a problematic vintage that was characterized by endless heat waves and, at times, dangerous drought. Thanks to heavily reduced yields, Markus Molitor picked fully ripe and healthy grapes that did not show any stress symptoms. Initially discreet and refined, the nose becomes intense with more air and then, the next day, even seductive in its bright and aromatic perfume, with pure notes of crushed slate, herbs, salt, stewed apples and kumquats or pink grapefruit, then later with ripe, lush and tropical yellow stone fruits. On the palate, this is a rich but refined and elegant Saar Riesling that is everything but bone dry or steely, with a mouth-filling texture and a very long, saline and savory finish with grip and tension yet an overall charming nature. One could argue that this is a richer version of the Kabinett, yet in the long term, this grand cru is the greater, more complex and textured wine. The finish is still young and, in a positive way, astringent. It will take 10 years or so to meet this wine in its first blossom. 12% stated alcohol. Natural cork." - Stephan Reinhardt

"A gorgeous wine from a difficult vintage marked by heatwaves and drought. Petrol, inviting white floral aspects with peach and lemon scents. Smells lovely. Gunsmoke and flint elements too. Sharp and so delicious straight away, crunchy white and yellow stone fruit with piercing and racy acidity that gives a sherbet tang to the palate although this is technically off-dry. Clean and crystalline, great purity and sense of class, long intense, concentrated yet amazingly light on its feet. Lovely stuff. Round and generous but perfectly balanced and controlled. Refined and finessed but offering so much flavour with mouthwatering acidity. I love it." - Georgina Hindle

"Staggeringly youthful for a wine from such a hot and dry year. But that’s what makes the Saar so special. Wonderful combination of ripeness and delicacy, with peaches and spring blossoms on the nose. What makes the barely medium-bodied palate so remarkable is the way the succulence flips to mouthwatering freshness in the stunningly vibrant finish. Only 9.5% alcohol. "Markus Molitor's Saar Domäne Serrig 2022 Kabinett Vogelsang is remarkably pure, saline and intense on the nose, intermingling lush pineapple and tropical stone fruit aromas with notes of crystalline rocks, lemon oil and sea salt. This is a pure, fresh and savory as well as intense and slightly flinty-flavored Riesling from weathered slate, and it shows an iron-like twist with candied lemon notes and brown sugar on the nose. Lush yet crystalline and refined, this is an intense and very elegant yet weightless Kabinett whose richness is uplifted by a saline acidity and gorgeous finesse. This is a featherlight yet perfectly ripe, quite complex, immediately mouthwatering and aromatic Kabinett with sweet pineapple aromas, fine grip and, initially, the sharpness of a slate plate that becomes rounder with aeration. The Kabinett Prädikat is not interpreted as particularly light in terms of bright and airy Riesling here but instead a serious vin de terroir in the typical Saar style: light, crystalline, precise and saline but also hedonistic without being all too rich. This is a highly stimulating 2022 Kabinett with full ripeness, good concentration and a long, intense and aromatic finish with fine grip and mouthwatering salinity. It's a great, filigreed yet intense Kabinett, the best wine of the vintage. 9.5% stated alcohol. Natural cork." - Stephan Reinhardt

"Stony petrol kerosine on the nose, flint, slate and lemon. Unmistakable German Riesling. A dollop of sweet peach and nectarine fruit with a deep core of almost fleshy and racy acidity - the two giving a push-pull but giving an overall excellent and delicious expression. Totally enjoyable with mouthwatering acidity alongside flavours of crisp and baked apples, slate saltiness and a touch of exotic yellow fruit.
