Domaine Ghislaine Barthod, Chambolle-Musigny

In the 1980s, Ghislaine Barthod began her apprenticeship with her father at the family's domaine, formerly known as Domaine Barthod-Noellat. She breathed new life into the domaine in every aspect, from vineyard management to vinification.  Through her direction, the domaine has become a standard-bearer for Chambolle Musigny.  Today, Ghislaine's son, Clement Boillot has assumed control of the domaine domaine, while his parents actively remain involved.

Les Chatelots sits just above Aux Combottes on the slope, directly below the village of Chambolle itself, and sandwiched between the great premier crus Les Feusselottes and Les Gruenchers. Barthod owns just .25ha - we are pleased to offer both 2017 and 2020, just 12 bottles of each available...

2020 Domaine Ghislaine Barthod Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Chatelots

"Clément Boillot opted to retain only the old vines for his 2020 Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Chatelots, declassifying the younger plantings into the domaine's generic Chambolle-Musigny. Bursting with notes of minty cherries, sweet berries and spices, it's medium to full-bodied, supple and vibrant, with impressive concentration and tension." - William Kelley

"There are also just two barrels of the 2020 Chambolle-Musigny Les Chatelots ler Cru this year, though this cuvée works better than the Aux Combettes at the moment. There is more fruit concentration on the nose with attractive blackcurrant, wild strawberry and briary scents. The palate is medium-bodied with succulent ripe black cherry and strawberry fruit, fine mineralité and quite a deep, lightly grippy finish. Very fine." - Neal Martin

"A perfumed and airy nose features the cool essence of red raspberry, rose petal, plum and subtle spice wisps. There is excellent intensity to the solidly concentrated medium weight flavors that are shaped by slightly raspy tannins on the firm and moderately austere finale. "Emphasizing elegance over power, the 2017 Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Chatelots reveals a pretty bouquet of raspberries, plums and dried flowers, complemented by hints of rose hip and raw cocoa. On the palate, the wine is medium-bodied, pure and succulent, with a tensile, chalky profile and a vibrant finish." - William Kelley

"The 2017 Chambolle-Musigny Les Chatelots ler Cru has a floral bouquet with wilted rose petals infusing the well-defined, transparent red fruit. The palate is well balanced with a sorbet-like entry and a fine bead of acidity, not deep or concentrated, but fresh and brimming with tension. "Here the expressive nose is more elegant still with somewhat higher-toned aromas of essence of red currant, raspberry and soft spice wisps. The lilting and pleasingly vibrant middle weight flavors are supported by beautifully fine-grained tannins on the lacy and graceful finish.
