Domaine Didier Dagueneau, Loire Valley

Once a world class motorcycle racer, dog-sled racer, and vigneron especially, Didier Dagueneau was a bullish renegade who redefined the Loire Valley through his iconic eponymous estate. With an allegiance to his terroir -- being one of the region's first to experiment with single-parcel wines -- and a fusion of ultra-traditional viticultural methods and modern winemaking practices, Didier realized the ultimate expression of terroir. Despite leaving large shoes to fill following his unexpected passing in 2008, his son, Louis-Benjamin (5th generation), has long proven to be up to the task. From humble beginnings of a mere 1.2 hectare parcel of Sauvignon Blanc to 12 hectares of Sauvignon Blanc and some Petit Mangseng, their intensely mineral, flinty and incredibly complex wines have long been one of the region's most sought after set wines. 

Viticulture: vines are farmed meticulously, with an average of one full time worker per hectare (2.5 acres), which is unheard of except at top domaines like Leroy. Extremely low yields, often 50-75% of their neighbors, soils worked by plow and horse, massale selection, 

Cellar: Didier was notorious for his extensive experimentation of barrels and élevage, constantly mixing sizes, shapes, and new oak percentages based on vineyard and vintage. The Dagueneaus work closely with the world's top coopers to produce cigar-shaped, low-toast barrels that offer nuanced benefits of lees contact and oxygen exchange. The current regimen calls for 1 year in oak and an additional 5-8 months in tank.

2023 Didier Dagueneau Pouilly-fume Pur Sang
Parcel located north of Saint Andelain called "La Folie." Smaller plots on the Saint Andelain hill are added depending on the vintage. Gently sloped with perfect south/southeast exposure and virtually no silex (entirely limestone).
Vinified and aged in 450, 600, and Didier's famous 350 Liter cigar-shaped barrels

Single parcel located mid-slope on the southwest side of Saint Andelain, the highest village in the Pouilly-Fume appellation, and the only one that possess soils of perfect balance of clay and flint (silex). Vinified and aged in neutral 450 and 600 Liter barrels

Produced only from plots high on the slopes of Saint Andelain, and only from vineyards that possess large amounts of silex. Vines here range from 15-50 years of age and are cropped to lower yields than in some other vineyards.
