Domaine Garon, Ampius - Côte-Rôtie
The Garon family has been based in Ampuis, since the 15th century - the family patriarch Jean Garon was born here in 1475. He farmed and grew grapes for a merchant, Guigal. In 1982, his descendants, Jean-François and Carmen Garon replanted vines on the abandoned slopes of Côte-Rôtie, bottling their first wine in 1995. In 2003 their sons, Kevin and Fabien joined the estate, steadily bringing quality to new levels.
The Garons farm their 8 hectares organically, most of the vineyard work is done by hand. They are traditionalist in the cellar. Côte-Rôtie is 100% syrah. The grapes are crushed in whole bunches. The amount of destemming varies, depending on the vintage and the vineyard. The wines are aged in an average of 30% new, French oak barrels and the remainder is aged in 5 year old barrels for between 18 to 24 months.
"The wines, when tasted, speak first and foremost of their origins – not the hand that made them. The confident but understated approach means this domaine isn’t yet as well-known as some of the starrier names of Côte-Rôtie. But with quality like this, it’s only a matter of time."
- Matt Walls, Decanter
2019 Garon Cote-Rotie ‘Les Rochins’ • 98JD, 96VN, 95JS, 97DC
"The only wine from this estate from the Côte Brune side of the appellation, the 2019 Côte Rôtie Les Rochins sports a dense purple hue to go with brilliant aromatics of darker, almost blue fruits as well as notes of crushed stone, graphite, ground pepper, and violets. Rich and medium to full-bodied, with remarkable purity and precision and a sensational finish, it’s another tremendous wine from this family." - Jeb Dunnuck
"Opaque ruby. Powerful, oak-spiced black and blue fruit aromas show distinctly primary character and pick up hints of smoky minerals, olive, licorice and potpourri with aeration. Broad and fleshy on the palate, offering lush blackberry, cherry-cola and fruitcake flavors and suggestions of vanilla and smoky bacon. Shows excellent clarity and powerful, spicy thrust on the impressively long finish, which is framed by pliant, steadily building tannins." - Josh Reynolds
"Big black fruit with plenty of smoke on the nose, plus some pepper and raw meat. Rich and quite expansive on the palate with a wonderful balance of ripe fruit and full, fine tannins. They build beautifully at the long, plush finish. So much life ahead of it." - James Suckling
2019 Garon Cote Rotie ‘Lancement’ • 96+JD, 95VN, 94JS
"The 2019 Côte Rôtie Lancement is beautiful and a classic representation of this great terroir. Exotic flowers, bacon fat, spice, and red and black fruits define the bouquet, and it’s as Côte Rôtie as it gets, offering medium to full body, a seamless, elegant, yet also structured mouthfeel and a great finish. Beautifully done, it will benefit from 4-5 years of bottle age and have upwards of two decades of prime drinking." - Jeb Dunnuck
"Deep violet color. Mineral-accented dark berries, cherry-cola, candied flowers and exotic spices the highly energetic nose. Juicy and seamless in texture, offering concentrated black raspberry, bitter cherry and boysenberry flavors that are underscored by a vein of smoky minerality. Deep but vibrant as well, with fine-grained tannins building slowly on a very long, floral-driven finish that leaves resonating blue fruit and spice notes behind." - Josh Reynolds
"Deep and complex nose of blackberry, pepper, leather and smoke. Excellent tannin structure that some find a bit challenging at this early stage in the wine’s life. Cool and very straight, in spite of all the power on the medium-weight palate, the long finish intensely mineral and very fresh. Good aging potential. Drinkable now, but best from 2024." - James Suckling
