Conti Costanti | 2017 Brunello “Beautifully Done” & 2019 Riserva “Absolutely Breathtaking”

Founded in 1555 in the Sienna province, Conti Costanti is one of the 5 original Brunello producers, along with Biondi-Santi, Fattoria dei Barbi, Il Poggione, and Lisini.  Costanti Brunellos were unknown until the early 1960s, circulating solely among the owners’ friends and family. It was Count Emilio Costanti who first to released his wines to the public.

Having no children of his own, Emilio Costanti traced his ancestry and found his sole living descendant - Andrea Costanti - a recent graduate in geology from the University of Siena.  Andrea inherited the estate in 1983 and has been running it since.  Known as Colle al Matrichese, it is a high altitude monopole cru, known for elegance, complexity, and classicism.

"2019 was a fantastic vintage in Montalcino and in particular for storied producer Conti Costanti. Andrea Costanti’s compelling 2019 Brunello Riserva is exquisite, starting with its heady scents of violet, rose, exotic dark spice, camphor and forest floor. Brimming with class and extreme elegance, the delicious palate mesmerizes with great depth and layers of flavor including Morello cherry, raspberry compote, orange zest, licorice, cake spice and crushed mint framed in tightly woven, refined tannins. Bright acidity provides impeccable balance and intensity. This is already tempting but the best is yet to come. The Costanti Riservas are only made in extraordinary years, and like the 2016 Riserva, the 2019 is made from the oldest estate vines. After fermenting and aging all the vineyards separately, the final cut was made in the cellar after three years of refinement in barrel. It’s absolutely breathtaking."

"The 2019 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva displays all of the characteristics of the vintage that make this year truly special. Darkly floral and captivating, it exudes class with a radiant blend of dried black cherries, sage, lavender, hints of pine and a cooling whiff of white smoke. This balances depths of ripe red berry fruit with sweet spices and violet inner florals, all accelerated by brilliant acidity. "Aromatically, the 2017 Brunello di Montalcino has found a lovely balance, dark and balsamic, with dried cherries, cloves, spiced citrus and lifting hints of cedar and pine. This is seductively soft-textured and round. A zesty, acidic, spicy core offsets a silken wave of ripe red berry fruits. Its minerality shines through in the finish as edgy tannins resonate and a pleasantly bitter sensation settles in. The 2017 tapers off long and structured, yet not as severe as many of its vintage counterparts. The balance within is lovely.
