Rare Grower Bubbles: Clandestin Champagne

Clandestin
(meaning hidden, secret, or undercover)

Located in the Côte des Bars, Champagne Clandestin is the brainchild of Burgundy born vigneron, Benoit Doussot. Despite his formal studies in Beaune and extensive training under Jean-Philippe Fichet, Doussot's calling was Champagne, where he made the bold transition with his inaugural 2015 vintage.

Doussot produces two Blanc de Noirs each vintage:
Boréal: from north-facing sites
Austral: from the latter south-facing sites

All fruit is sourced from some 14 hectares of organically farmed vineyards, all of which are located on a mid-slope second terrace of Kimmeridgian limestone. Vinification is carried out plot by plot in used 500 and 600-liter Burgundian barrels, undergoing long, native fermentations with full malo conversion.

"Coming from north-facing vines on Portlandian soils, the NV Champagne Blanc De Noirs Boreal Brut Nature is a straw copper color and 100% Pinot Noir from 2022. As with all the wines from Clandestin, they use all the press juice, which they believe is crucial to capturing the full identity of the grapes and their terroir. Aged for 12 months in barrel, this wine offers a ripe and full structure, with savory notes of apricot, fresh cereal grain, yellow flowers and salty earth. The mousse is refined, pillowy, and softens its vibrant core of acidity. It's a gorgeous wine to drink over the coming 15 years. Disgorged in 2024."

"Pouring a copper hue, the NV Champagne Blanc De Noirs Austral Brut Nature opens with a dramatically different personality. It’s more vertical and offers attractive notes of flinty wet stones, redcurrants, and white pepper. Medium to full-bodied, the palate shines with a pillowy, refined mousse, ripe red fruit lasting long on the midpalate, and a long finish with lasting smoky incense. Disgorged in September 2024. Drink 2025-2040."
