Champagne Suenen | Top Address in the Côte de Blancs
Few producers in the Côte de Blancs can rival the wines from Champagne Suenen.
Aurélien returned to his family estate (established in 1898) and produced his first set of wines in 2009. He began with a range of non-vintage cuvées, before debuting Les Robarts in 2012 and the remaining lieux-dits the following year. Today, Suenen works just 3.5 hectares divided into 20 plots. Select parcels are managed with high canopies, though all are managed entirely organic by hand. In the cellar, the vins clairs are vinified in tanks, concrete eggs, and barrels. Roughly a third new oak is used for non-vintage cuvées, whereas the lieux-dits are raised in mature foudres; both French and Hungarian oak. Tirage takes place after 9 months on lees, and nothing is released to market until each bottle undergoes an additional 30-months under cork.
As the scores from Kristaps Karklins can attest, these are some of the most dependable wine in contemporary Champagne.
NV Suenen Champagne Grand Cru ‘C+C’ Blanc de Blancs Extra Brut (base 2022)
WA94
"Closer in style to the 2018 rendition than to the 2021, the new Blanc de Blancs Grand Cru C + C, as ever, draws from the communes of Cramant and Chouilly. Based on the 2022 vintage and complemented by 50% perpetual reserve, it was disgorged in July 2025 with a dosage of four grams per liter, with roughly half of the wine vinified in tank and the remainder in wood. The wine opens with notes of orange oil, pear, dried flowers and freshly baked bread, leading into a medium- to full-bodied, rich and textural palate, underpinned by racy acidity and dry extract, and concluding in a long, sapid finish. Readers will recall that it was this cuvée that prompted Aurélien Suenen to reconsider his approach to the lieux-dits, potentially incorporating a reserve-wine component to temper vintage character and allow site to take center stage."
2019 Suenen Champagne Grand Cru ‘La Cocluette’ Oiry Blanc de Blancs Extra Brut
WA96+
"Continuing its strong run, the 2019 Blanc de Blancs Grand Cru Oiry La Cocluette, disgorged in June 2025 with a dosage of three grams per liter, blossoms in the glass with aromas of orange oil, pear and peach, mingled with notes of iris and a faint hint of Sichuan pepper. On the palate, it is full-bodied and concentrated, ample and textural, built around racy acidity and chalky structuring extract, concluding with a precise, intensely saline finish. As always, the most tightly wound of Suenen’s lieux-dits Blanc de Blancs, it marries the flamboyance of the vintage with tension and possesses the structure to age for 15 to 20 years post-harvest."
2019 Suenen Champagne Grand Cru ‘Le Mont-Aigu’ Chouilly Blanc de Blancs Extra Brut
WA96+
"Harvested in mid-September at comparatively low yields, the 2019 Blanc de Blancs Grand Cru Chouilly Le Mont-Aigu, disgorged in June 2025 with a dosage of four grams per liter, remains—as ever—the richest and most dramatic wine in the range. It bursts from the glass with a deep bouquet of lemon confit, crisp pear, peach and almond paste, mingled with notes of freshly baked bread. The palate is full-bodied and concentrated, ample and textural, built around a muscular core of ripe, mature fruit, supported by succulent yet vibrant acidity and concluding in a long, enveloping finish. As always, it is more powerful than La Cocluette and Les Robarts."
2019 Suenen Champagne Grand Cru ‘Les Robarts’ Cramant Blanc de Blancs Extra Brut
WA98
"The 2019 Blanc de Blancs Grand Cru Cramant Les Robarts is brilliant. Disgorged in June 2025 with a dosage of three grams per liter, it encapsulates the impact of thoughtful farming allied to a picture-perfect growing season, emerging from the glass with aromas of lemon confit, dried flowers and fresh hazelnut, mingled with toasted bread and a deft application of oak. On the palate, it is full-bodied and muscular, with an ample and layered core built around ripe yet racy acidity and vast reserves of structuring dry extract. Despite its concentration, it has preserved its identity beautifully and promises a long evolution, aging on its substance and revealing different facets at successive stages without deterioration, as this cuvée has well demonstrated over time. Reviewing the 2018, I wrote that I could not wait to see what Suenen would do with the 2019, and it has indeed met my high expectations."
