Champagne Miniere F&R | “With quality like this, Minière won't remain a secret for much longer”
Champagne Minière F&R, Hermonville - Massif de Saint-Thierry
While still relatively unknown, we are already convinced...
Brothers Frédéric & Rodolphe Minière oversee this 7.6-hectare property, purposefully limiting their production to the best and oldest vines from only 2 hectares. While the estate has been in the family since the 1920s, it was only with Frédéric's perseverence that they went from growers to grower-producers.
During his oenology studies Frédéric spent two years intermittently working at Domaine Jacques Selosse in 1995 and 1996, where he was introduced to organic farming methods and barrel vinification. This formative experience convinced him to bottle Champagnes under his family name. It took over 10 years of making wine and selling it off to convince their father to allow them to do so. He then retired and their debut vintage was 2007, which was not released until 2014. Since then, they have only gone from strength to strength.
"These are vinous and intense Champagnes with incisive personality and old-vine concentration, framed by a light patina of oak from their fermentation in barrel and extended aging sur lattes...With quality like this, Minière F & R won't remain a secret for much longer." -Kristaps Karklins, Wine Advocate
2015 Minière F&R Champagne ‘Symbiose’
• 95WA
"Disgorged in June 2024 with a dosage of 3.5 grams per liter, Minière’s 2015 Symbiose, an almost equal blend of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, wafts from the glass with a deep bouquet of roasted hazelnut, fresh succulent fig and roasted cacao bean, mingled with notes of lime—a level of complexity that can only emerge through extended aging sur lattes. On the palate, it is medium- to full-bodied and ample yet chiseled, with a tightly wound core underpinned by incisive acidity, culminating in a long, lemon-inflected finish that remains true to the no-malolactic style of the cuvée. Readers will recall that it is derives from two lieux-dits: Voirmissa, which contributes the Pinot Noir, and Moineaux, the source of the Chardonnay." -Kristaps Karklins
2018 Minière F&R Champagne ‘Vigne à Alfred’
• 94WA
"Only the second release of this cuvée, Minière’s 2018 Blanc de Noirs La Vigne à Alfred pays homage to Frédéric’s and Rodolphe’s great-grandfather, Alfred. It hails from the estate’s oldest vines, a 0.26-hectare plot within the Les Voirmissa lieu-dit planted with Pinot Meunier in 1947 on silty-clay soils. At the time, planting density was 10,000 vines per hectare, and it’s still the case today. Vinified in used oak barrels with full malolactic fermentation, it opens with a deep bouquet of orange zest, gingerbread and dried plum, mingling with white currant and gooseberry. On the palate, it is full-bodied, muscular and rich, with a broad, textural attack and a ripe core of fruit shaped by the warm growing season, underpinned by lively acidity and concluding with a long, saline finish. It was disgorged in June 2024 without dosage but contains three grams per liter of residual sugar. It’s a flamboyant, gastronomic wine defined by old-vine concentration." -Kristaps Karklins
NV Minière F&R Champagne ‘Brut Zéro’ (base 2020)
• NR, other release reviews 92WA, 92JD, 92VN
"Minière’s new NV Brut Zéro is based on the 2022 vintage and incorporates 20% reserve wines from 2021. Disgorged without dosage in January 2026, it lifts from the glass with aromas of nectarine, orange peel and quince mingled with notes of yellow apple. Medium-bodied and rich yet vibrant, the palate is structured around a bright spine of acidity and a crisp core of fruit, concluding with a long, bone-dry finish marked by delicate phenolic grip." - 92WA, Kristaps Karklins
