Billaud-Simon's Best: Les Clos, Les Preuses, and Blanchots

Domaine Billaud-Simon has long since been a cornerstone of Chablis. Founded in 1815 by Charles Louis Noël Billaud, the domaine hadn't truly cemented their elite status until the 1930s, when the estate expanded through the marriage of Jean Billaud to Renée Simon, bringing new vineyard holdings. Across the appellation, but most notably in their Grand Crus, the wines focus on crisp, mineral-driven Chardonnay, offering both early appeal and aging potential.

Since 2006, Burgundy native Olivier Bailly has been at the helm of winemaking (working under the direction fo Jérôme Flous of Faiveley), remaining committed to the domaine's core principles while implementing new concepts to further improve quality (organic and biodynamic farming).

2023 Billaud-Simon Chablis Grand Cru Blanchots
TA95, DC94, BH93, JM92

"Blanchots is not especially productive, especially near the top of the vineyard and consistent with this, Bailly noted that the yields in 2023 were 45 hl/ha, which he claims is the most that they have ever made. The elegant, cool and airy nose reflects notes of mineral reduction and a similar explosion of floral elements to the Montée de Tonnerre where nuances of zest and quinine add breadth. There is fine volume to the vibrant medium weight flavors that display excellent length on the bone-dry, youthfully austere and markedly compact finale. This is a very fine 2023 that's going to need at least some patience."

2023 Billaud-Simon Chablis Grand Cru Les Clos
TA96, JM93-95, BH93, DC93

"Subtle wood plays easily allows the overtly floral-suffused aromas of oyster shell, algae, green apple and mineral reduction to shine. The sleek, intense and stony broad-shouldered flavors are also quite seductive thanks to the abundance of sappy dry extract that buffers the firm acid spine shaping the youthfully austere and beautifully long finish. This decidedly compact effort is a very dense 2023, indeed it's almost thick, but the palate impression remains vibrant and balanced."

2023 Billaud-Simon Chablis Grand Cru Les Preuses
TA95, BH94, DC94, JM92-94

"A subtle dollop of wood can be found on the cool, airy and elegant, even wafting, nose that blends notes of white orchard fruit, acacia, mineral reduction and shrimp shell nuances. The strikingly textured medium-bodied flavors also brim with sappy dry extract while displaying focused power on the equally compact, youthfully austere and lingering finish. This is very classy, and overall, this beautifully persistent effort is definitely going to need time in bottle because as noted, it's quite compact.
I would add that this is one of the best wines of the 2023 vintage."
