Another Electric CDP - 97 and 98 Point La Combe des Fous
Well, after the Sabon CDP offer on Monday, it's clear there is an interest in high scoring Southern Rhone wines. To that end, today we have another rock star from one of my favorite producers, it's the 2018 Clos Saint Jean Chateauneuf du Pape La Combe des Fous. This bottlings comes from a single plot of nearly 120 year old vines...it's a Grenache heavy blend that's the elegant counterpart to the Deus Ex Machina bottling.
And I can tell you from experience they are delicious early and age effortlessly! I still have 2007, 2009, and 2010 in my cellar.
"Since taking control of the estate in 2002, and bringing on board rock star consultant Philippe Cambie, the Maurel brothers has been knocking it out of the park in literally every vintage. As to the Combe des Fous release, this cuvee comes from a single plot of vines and is based largely on Grenache, with roughly 20% Syrah and 10% each of Vaccarese and Cinsault in the blend. The Grenache is aged all in tank and the other components see time in mostly demi-muids. While the Deux ex Machina always impresses more with its overt power and muscle, this cuvee always seems more polished, fine and elegant to me." - Wine Advocate, Aug 2014

WA 97 - "The 2018 Chateauneuf du Pape La Combe des Fous features electric aromas of garrigue, exotic stone fruit, pomegranate, black cherries and perhaps even a touch of rose petals. Full-bodied and rich without being overly weighty or dense, plush and velvety on the finish yet vibrant and complex, this magnificent effort should drink well for at least a decade. From vines planted in 1905, it's approximately 60% Grenache, 20% Syrah, 10% Cinsault and 10% Vaccarese." - Wine Advocate, Oct 2020
