Domaine Comte Abbatucci, Corsica

The Abbatucci family built their family estate in the 16th century, in the Southern part of Corsisa among the granite sandy slopes of the Taravo Valley.  In the 1920s Jacques Abbatucci planted five hectares of Sciaccarellu, Niellucciu, Barbarossa, and Carcaghjolu. His son Antoine succeeded him in the 1960s and enlarged the planted area. Antoine's son Jean-Charles Abbatucci, took over in 2000.

Jean-Charles converted the 21 hectares of vines to biodynamic farming.  His vines come from cuttings of indigenous grapes, sourced decades ago high up in the isolated and mountainous interior of the island from elderly peasant farmers, effectively saving several native varieties from extinction.  (Because the INAO allows no more than 10 percent of old varieties in appellation wines, the entire production is bottled as Vin de France.)  On the rest of his 100ha estate, he keeps a pristine poly-culture ecosystem in place, complete with herds of sheep foraging through his vines, groves of olive trees on ancient terraces, and large swaths of untouched forests.
