Domaine Claude Riffault, Sury-en-Vaux - Sancerre

Stéphane Riffault, son of Claude Riffault, has become one of the most sought-after producers in the region.  When his father retired, Stéphane took over embarked upon transforming the domaine. Today, all 13 hectares of Sauvignon Blanc are certified organic and biodynamic.  The entire harvest is carried out by hand and an extensive sorting takes place before the grapes are crushed.

Stéphane's Sancerre bottlings come from 33 different parcels in 8 different lieu-dits spread across 4 villages on limestone soils. Having studied and worked in Burgundy, and then trained with some of best – Olivier Leflaive, Château Angélus – it’s easy to see that influence in his wines.  All parcels are fermented separately, and vinification takes place in high-quality Burgundy barrels.

The resulting wines are mineral driven, precise, and age-worthy.  Impressive stuff here.

2022 Claude Riffault Sancerre ‘Les Denisottes’ - 94+WA, 93VN
40-50 year old vines on Kimmeridgian limestone (Terre Blanches).  Hand harvested, natural yeast fermentation in neutral 600L French oak demi-muids.  Aged in neutral demi-muids.

"Situated just 100 meters from the estate, the 2022 Sancerre Les Denisottes plot spans a modest 1.3 hectares of clay and calcareous soils known as “terres blanches” in Sancerre. Evoking a pure, delicate bouquet of ripe orchard fruits, spices, pear and licorice, it’s medium to full-bodied, satiny and mouth coating with a seamless texture, a fleshy core of fruit and a tense, ethereal, delicate finish enhanced by notes of citrus. Matured for 14 months in large wood barrels, this wine has the potential to gracefully reach its 15th anniversary in fine form."
