2024 Louis Billard Release - One of Burgundy's Most Intriguing New Names - Extremely Limited
Every year a handful of young Burgundy vignerons emerge with impeccable pedigrees, but very few generate the excitement that surrounds Louis Billard. A fifth-generation grower from La Rochepot in the Hautes-Côtes de Beaune, Billard spent time working at some of Burgundy's most revered estates, including Domaine de la Romanée-Conti and Domaine Georges Roumier, before launching his own domaine with the 2022 vintage.
What immediately stands out is not only Billard's impressive résumé, but also the meticulous and thoughtful approach he brings to both the vineyard and cellar. His winemaking philosophy is rooted in precision and transparency. White grapes are pressed slowly as whole clusters over several hours with carefully controlled pressure, allowing him to fine-tune the extraction through constant tasting. The musts are then permitted to oxidize naturally before settling overnight, a traditional approach that helps build complexity and stability without intervention.
For the reds, fruit is harvested by hand into small crates and chilled overnight before a cold maceration and spontaneous fermentation with indigenous yeasts. Extraction is deliberately gentle, relying on a small number of pump-overs early in fermentation and selective punch-downs toward the end to achieve balance and finesse rather than power. All fermentations occur naturally, and the wines are matured in a combination of new barrels from some of Burgundy's finest coopers and carefully selected used barrels sourced from Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, allowing the character of each vineyard to remain at the forefront.
The result is a collection of wines that perfectly reflects Billard's elite training: wines of purity, energy, and remarkable site expression. The quality of the first releases suggests that Louis Billard is at the start of a rapid ascent.
