2023 Alex Moreau: Narrowing our Focus on a World Class Vigneron

Domaine Alex Moreau, Chassagne-Montrachet

Following the subdivision of the family domaine and the termination of a sharecropping agreement, Alex Moreau is now left with a mere 5.5 hectares. Despite these disruptive changes, Alex has shrugged it off with ease, rebranding with his new eponymous label, effective from the 2021 vintage, continuing his output of wines regarded amongst the best in the Côte d'Or.

The size of Alex Moreau's estate has changed, but the approach has not: long pressing for white, followed by vinification in predominantly François Frères with native yeasts, one year élevage in wood, followed by six months on the lees in tank before bottling under natural cork.

"Tasted from barrel, unracked. The 2023 Caillerets merits a longer elevage and Alex has the space for it in the cellar. Primrose colour, with a peachier element to the nose on top of the little stones. What a starburst of flavour on the palate, really singing in this format. A touch of oak at the back, not unexpectedly, in support of a marvellous wine. Drink from 2030-2036."

"The 2023 Chassagne-Montrachet Les Grands Ruchottes 1er Cru had just been racked at the time of this tasting. It has a very expressive bouquet with citrus fruit, lemon curd and crushed stone scents that gain intensity in the glass. The palate is well balanced and poised, with a touch of white pepper on the finish. This is a multi-faceted Chassagne."

"The 2023 Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru from the Ladoix side presents a precise bouquet, mineral-driven with impressive depth and scents of yellow plum and jasmine emerging over time. The palate is well balanced with crisp acidity, fresh and saline, building beautifully toward a slightly nutty finish. This is one of my favorite wines from the famous hillside."

"The 2023 Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru has a completely seductive bouquet with hints of white peach and marron glacé on the nose, combining beautifully with the mineral and citrus scents. The palate is well balanced with a tropical-tinged entry, quite forward and very expressive again. This is perhaps the most seductive Bâtard-Montrachet that I encountered in my tastings." -Neal Martin
