Guillaume d'Angerville is the man behind Volnay's most sought-after address. The secret behind their wines achieving ascendancy is that there is no secret, rather, exceptional terroir... case in point with their Clos des Ducs monopole, argued to be deserving of "grand cru" status.

2020 Volnay 1er Cru Les Caillerets
BH92-95 (Outstanding), WA93+, VN92-94, JM89-92
"As is usually the case, this is notably spicier with its strikingly pure nose of red currant, plum, violet, lavender and dried herb wisps. Much like the Clos des Angles, the mouthfeel is lilting though decidedly punchy while the equally persistent and youthfully austere finish seems to be built on a base of firm minerality. This elegant effort appears to have everything it needs to reward extended aging. In a word, excellent."

2023 Volnay 1er Cru Fremiet

"The 2023 Volnay 1er Cru Fremiet is deeper-pitched than Les Angles, wafting from the glass with notes of raspberries, plums and licorice. It's medium to full-bodied, supple and charming, with a succulent core of fruit, polished tannins and a saline finish."

"A restrained and intensely floral-suffused nose is reticent to the point of being brooding and only grudgingly provides glimpses of fresh dark berries and spice whiffs. The precise, highly energetic and super-fine middleweight flavors also exude evident minerality on the moderately austere and equally long finale. I almost always prefer the d'Angerville Taillepieds to their Champans but that could well change in 2022 as this is outstanding."

"Bright mid purple. Immediate distinction and discretion, impeccably balanced. Alpine strawberry, finesse with intensity, picked at impeccable ripeness, the last red to be picked, on 9th September, but it has held out thanks to underground springs. Everything exactly where anybody would want it and stays in the mouth for so long. Drink from 2033-2045."

"The 2023 Volnay Les Champans 1er Cru has a delineated, intricate bouquet that opens beautifully in the glass. It is surprisingly mineral-driven given the warmth of the season, with the terroir really coming through. The palate is medium-bodied with slightly edgier tannins compared to the Taillepieds. This finely crafted, quite sapid Champans is fresh with a little more salinity, particularly toward the finish."

"There is a whiff of exotic spice sitting atop the ripe aromas of black raspberry coulis, violet, orange peel and Asian-style tea. The caressing but solidly energetic middle weight plus flavors manage to be at once elegant yet powerful before culminating in an equally austere, compact and beautifully well-balanced finale. This beauty of a Champans is also going to need at least 7 to 8 years of patience and should be more than capable of rewarding 12 to 15."

"The grand vin of the domaine is not the deepest in colour. A wonderful perfume, the most delicate of roses yet with a force of its own, while the little red fruits are very subtle too. This is a wonderful gracious and graceful wine, giving me sheer pleasure even in its infancy. It is constructed in so much detail, little pinpricks of red fruited pleasure throughout, with the precision of long-term biodynamics allied to this vintage of entirely healthy fruit. Drink from 2032-2040."

"The Clos des Ducs and Champans were a little less affected by the frost, with 15 barrels of each made. Quite discreet at first, which is not unusual, then an explosion on the second half of the palate. One can really see the class of this terroir, offering subtly nuanced red fruit with raspberry and alpine strawberry. Guillaume d’Angerville reports that the Clos des Ducs is fattening up nicely during the elevage. Definitely the most complex wine. Drink from 2028-2035."

"The 2020 Volnay Clos des Ducs 1er Cru was picked around 23 August. It has a highly perfumed bouquet with rose petals, red cherries, raspberry and incenses, beautifully defined and wonderfully controlled. The palate also conveys a sense of effortlessness that is utterly beguiling. Very harmonious, balletically-poised thanks to its fine bead of acidity, this Clos des Ducs unfurls in the glass with a lilting, very pure and almost balletic finish. Quite saline on the aftertaste such that it urges you back for another sip. Sophisticated (as usual) yet delicious."
