Benoit Moreau has Just Arrived... Unsold Bottles Still Available!
Benoit Moreau, Chassagne-Montrachet
I am excited to offer a small smattering of the exciting and new producer Benoit Moreau. His wines are in high-demand and catching fire!
Very limited quantities.
What we love is the precision in his wines that feel fine-boned while enveloping on the palate to demonstrate fine length and focus. While we are huge fans of his brother Alex's wines, there is something great definitely taking shape here that is worth keeping an eye on. We liken these to the Bernard-Bonin wines.

From Allen Meadows...
"Benoit Moreau, brother of Alex (see immediately above), chose to take his half of the former Domaine Bernard Moreau and start his own Domaine farming 4.2 ha of vines. He notes that 100% of his vines, with the exception of a parcel of En Remilly in St. Aubin will be located in Chassagne. To facilitate the production of his own wines, an impressive new cuverie was constructed just east of Chassagne in a newly demarcated and modern industrial zone, barely in time for the 2021 harvest. As an aside, readers should be aware that even though he did release a few of the Bernard Moreau 2020s under his name, 2021 is the first vintage where he did everything from start to finish. He explained that in 2022 he began harvesting on the 24th of August and brought in yields of 40 to 45 hl/ha for the white with potential alcohols of 12.8 to 13.2%. Moreau believes in a long élevage and noted that he would bottle deliberately, which is to say between February and August 2024. I would alert readers that Moreau is a seriously talented young man and his wines should be on your radar going forward."
From William Kelley...
"Benoit set up his own Domaine in November 2020. In 2020, to prepare for the transition, Benoit acquired some must from close friends whose methods are in sympathy with his own. In 2021, however, he worked almost entirely with Domaine fruit, and the results are even more thrilling, delivering one of the most compelling portfolios to be found in the Côte de Beaune in that challenging vintage. His 2022s match those wines, displaying satiny textures, minimal oak influence and a vibrant, fine-boned style that's far removed from the fat, fleshy stereotype of Chassagne-Montrachet.
As readers will remember, farming at this address is biodynamic, with certification underway, and Moreau is committed to working all his premier crus by hand or with the aid of small caterpillar-tracked chenillards. In some parcels, he's experimenting with "tressage" instead of hedging the vines' canopies; and when he does hedge, it's done by hand. Green cover crops will help build up organic matter in the soils and protect them from summer heat. In terms of winemaking, he crushes before pressing when the skins are fully ripe, and he works using indigenous yeasts and bacteria, with elevages in 228-liter barrels lasting 18 months, followed by bottling under high-quality natural cork and finishing wax."
From Neal Martin...
"As I have stated several times in recent reports, Chassagne is a hotbed of talent at the moment. After splitting with his brother Alex at Domaine Bernard Moreau & Fils, Benoît Moreau. I arrived full of expectation and did not depart disappointed. These wines show breathtaking precision and vitality, each articulating their respective terroirs in accomplished style. His La Grande Ruchotte is as good a Chassagne-Montrachet as you will find in 2022, with Maltroie and Les Chenevotte just a whisker behind. Readers should also check out his Beaujolais range under the L'Arlésienne label."
